Crime Analyst

Department: Special Investigations Section
Location: Daytona Beach, FL

Crime Analyst

Starting Pay: $24.93 hourly

General Description:

Responsible for work in the utilization of collected information on reported crimes and criminals to prevent and suppress criminal activities and apprehend criminal offenders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, political science or related field, AND
  • One (1) year experience as a Crime Analyst or similarly related analytical work in management or law enforcement.
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to work a twelve (12) hour shift, rotating between dayshift and nightshift, including holidays, and weekends, and mandatory overtime to meet operational needs.

Background Screening: This position will require an extensive background investigation and drug screening.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs all duties of a Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) Specialist as the foremost priority and carries out additional Crime Analyst functions including statistical analysis and investigative support.
  • Prepares statistical analysis of offenses by district and patrol zone.
  • Requests to assist in investigations and decision making.
  • Generates and distributes maps relating to temporal crime events as well as bulleting, charts, and graphs.
  • Generates and distributes maps of sexual predators/offenders.
  • Reviews county intelligence bulletins, run RMS queries in response.
  • Conducts comprehensive traffic accident studies with maps and other analysis.
  • Prepares Auto/MC theft tracking for grant funded task force.
  • Conducts meetings and presentations (i.e. neighborhood watches).
  • Prepares Narcotics buffer maps.
  • Attends deposition, court appearances.
  • Performs administrative duties (monthly reports, documentation required by professional standards etc.)
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Inside and occasional outside work.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Must be able to remain available to work when a public emergency or disaster occurs.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and use various computer software.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical and professional journals and manuals; reports, letters, memos, abstracts, instructions; legal documents, ordinances and statutes.
  • Ability to write reports, memos, letters, instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to speak publicly; conversant in theory and practices of discipline; persuasive speaking.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop conclusions.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems.
  • Ability to initiate and install administrative programs and procedures and to evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and extract information from law enforcement officer’s reports on crime.
  • Ability to make oral, written, and audio-visual presentations in a public or professional setting.

Required Knowledge:

  • VSO General Orders and procedures.
  • Principles of management and their application to the administration of governmental affairs.
  • Area of assignment, including trends and concerns.
  • Research and report writing techniques.
  • Basic accounting principles and procedures.
  • Florida Statutes, criminal methods of operations and crime analysis mapping.
  • Operation of ArcView and ArcInfo computer programs.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Software applications such as Word, Excel and Access.
  • Operation of VSO RMS program and Volusia County CJIS program.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ambulate independently.
  • See at a normal range or with reasonable accommodation.
  • Visual acuity (depth perception, peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Hear at normal level or with reasonable accommodation.
  • Occasionally bend, squat, reach, grasp.
  • Occasionally lift up to twenty-five pounds (25 lbs.).
