Systems Engineer II

Starting Salary: $63,488.95 annually, $1,220.94 weekly

General Description:

Responsible for performing technical work, planning, implementing, analyzing, designing, and maintaining virtual infrastructure, computer hardware, operating system software, data storage, and database management systems in a complex multi-system environment. Mentors other Systems Engineers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field, AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in systems or database administration.
  • A comparable amount of education and experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

Essential Functions:

  • Designs, implements, and maintains VMware Horizon VDI environment.
  • Designs, implements, and maintains VMware vSphere and Hyper-V Server Environment.
  • Prepares detailed technical analyses, recommendations, project plans, and cost projections for network projects.
  • Maintains high level of technical knowledge of network hardware and software.
  • Defines and allocates disk storage for file and database systems on servers and storage area networks (SAN).
  • Trains operational staff and automates routine operational and maintenance tasks.
  • Develops, documents, and enhances system administration procedures.
  • Prepares detailed technical analysis, recommendations, project plans, and cost projections for server and SAN projects.
  • Maintains high level of technical knowledge of server hardware, virtual environments, SANs, operating system software, and database management software.
  • Designs and implements high-availability hardware and software systems.
  • Analyzes user requirements, developers’ needs, and technical constraints.
  • Implements solutions across multiple operating systems.
  • Integrates new technologies into the existing data center environment.
  • Establishes Service Level Agreements with customers.
  • Communicates with customers regarding ongoing technical issues affecting performance.
  • Mentors and guides other Systems Engineers.
  • Assists in development of strategic plans for growth and resiliency.
  • Identifies key success factors and identifies necessary resource.
  • Verifies the integrity and availability of datacenter hardware.
  • Determines root cause of issues and communicates with the appropriate parties.
  • Notifies management of the need for escalation.
  • Thoroughly documents incidents, remediation activities, and resolutions.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation, including system diagrams, configuration records, and standard operating procedures.
  • Performs system monitoring; verifies the integrity and availability of systems.
  • Tunes system performance tuning and optimizes resource utilization.
  • Performs backup operations, ensuring successful and recoverable backups.
  • Manages inventory and physical storage and security of backup media.
  • Performs operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Performs hardware and software upgrades and migrations.
  • Performs system installation and recovery operation on a 24x7x365 basis.
  • Performs decommissioning of systems.
  • Provides technical expertise and assistance to other Information Technology staff.
  • Interfaces with vendor technical representatives.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:

  • General office settings with most duties being performed while sitting at a desk, table, or workstation.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Must be able to remain available to work during an emergency/disaster/epidemic, as directed.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in design, implementation, and administration of VMware vSphere ESXi environments.
  • Skilled in design, implementation, and administration of VMware Horizon VDI environments.
  • Skilled in design and implementation of computer server environments; including security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, routine maintenance, and automation of batch processing.
  • Skilled in the evaluation and recommendation of computer hardware and software.
  • Skilled in planning, coordinating, and scheduling projects.
  • Skilled in system analysis and tuning.
  • Skilled in system administration of physical and/or virtual servers running Windows, Linux, or Solaris operating systems.
  • Skilled in the identification and resolution of complex problems with server and SAN platforms.
  • Skilled in the installation, migration, and administration of cloud-based computing systems.
  • Skilled in the use of PowerShell and VBScript scripting languages.
  • Skilled in the administration of Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Ability to identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve datacenter system issues.
  • Ability to maintain a large-scale server environment.
  • Ability to organize work on multiple tasks, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to think logically and show attention and detail.
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Ability to read and comprehend manuals and instructions, layouts, memos, letters, procedures, safety instructions.
  • Ability to perform mathematical functions.

Required Knowledge:

  • Physical and virtual networking concepts. (Cisco Networking is a plus)
  • Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments.
  • Various types of network authentication; including password, two-factor, token, single-sign-on (SSO), and biometric authentication methods.
  • Server hardware, operating system software, database management systems, and utility software.
  • Data storage solutions to include fiber channel, SAN, vSAN, and NAS. (Pure Storage is a plus)
  • Local area networks (LANs).
  • IP addressing and network protocols.
  • Technical, legal, and regulatory frameworks for enforcing system security.
  • Principles and methods of planning, implementing, and managing information technology infrastructure.
  • VSO General Orders and procedures.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
  • GovQA, ERMS, TraCS, and OnBase
  • Florida Public Record law, including confidential and exempt information.
  • Report redaction process.
  • Knowledge of report destruction process beyond retention period.
  • Knowledge of intake process.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity.
