The School Crossing Guard escorts schoolchildren safely across streets and highways, monitoring their behavior and ensuring well-being. The member performs operations and clerical tasks and duties specific to the position. The School Crossing Guard ensures that the Department of Transportation’s procedures for the safe crossing of children as prescribed by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office are followed.
The most important and essential job function of the position is attitude which includes the following: interacting positively and cooperating with co-workers, responding politely to customers, working as a team member, functioning under intense time pressure and responding in a positive manner to supervision.
The School Crossing Guard may perform other related duties and tasks, as required and shall have the physical, mental and emotional abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position.
Physically and mentally capable of safely crossing children and fulfilling the requirements of the job.
Must successfully complete medical, CVSA, and background examinations.
Must have a home telephone or cell phone access.
Must maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Must have a 10th grade or higher education.
Places school sentinel warnings in the roadway at designated places near crossing points.
Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated crossings.
Reports all traffic hazards near school crossings to the supervisor or proper authorities.
Reports flagrant traffic violators and/or suspicious persons loitering in the school crossing areas.
May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
Must adhere to Federal, State, county, and Local ordinances.
Responds to emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Works during inclement weather conditions.
Works close to vehicular traffic flow.
Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
